At-Home Neck Swelling Assessment

Initial at-home ENT assessment for swellings and lumps noticed in the neck.

Swellings noticed in the neck can have many different causes, from infection-related lymph node enlargement to salivary gland or thyroid-related growths. During the at-home examination, the location, size, consistency and accompanying symptoms of the swelling are assessed in detail.

When needed, the throat and larynx area is also examined with a portable endoscopic imaging system; if further testing such as ultrasound, CT/MRI or a biopsy is required, a referral to an appropriate healthcare facility is made.

Who this is suitable for

  • Newly noticed neck swellings, painful or painless
  • Lymph nodes that enlarged after an upper respiratory infection
  • Neck swellings lasting longer than two to three weeks that need follow-up
  • Swelling accompanied by mild sore throat or swallowing discomfort

When this isn't suitable

  • Rapidly growing swellings that make breathing or swallowing difficult
  • Neck swelling with high fever and a general decline in condition (suspected deep neck infection)
  • Rapidly progressing swelling with skin redness and warmth
  • Sudden neck swelling following trauma

Frequently asked questions

How is a neck swelling assessed at home?
The location, size and consistency of the swelling are assessed by physical examination; when needed, the throat and larynx area is examined with endoscopic imaging. If further testing is required, an appropriate referral is made.
Is every neck swelling a sign of something serious?
No — a large share of neck swellings are infection-related lymph node enlargements. However, swellings that last longer than two to three weeks, keep growing, or come with symptoms such as weight loss should always be evaluated.
